Sports Recovery Massage in Dayton, Ohio

A practical guide for runners, lifters, cyclists and recreational athletes across the Dayton metro - when sports massage helps, when it hurts, and how often to book.

What sports massage actually does (and doesn''t do)

Sports massage is genuinely effective for: reducing post-workout soreness (DOMS), shortening recovery time between hard sessions, releasing the chronic tightness that wants to become an injury, restoring range of motion in overworked tissue, and priming the nervous system before a big effort.

It is not a substitute for sleep, hydration, fueling, programming or progressive overload. It''s a multiplier on top of those things.

The three types of sports massage

1. Pre-event (within 24 hours of an event)

Faster, more activating, shorter strokes. The goal is to raise tissue temperature and prime the nervous system without flattening you. Pre-event work avoids deep, sustained pressure that could leave the muscle sluggish. Best booked the day before or morning of an event.

2. Post-event (24-72 hours after)

Slower, more flushing, longer strokes. Designed to drain metabolic waste, reduce DOMS and reset the nervous system after a maximal effort. Pressure can be deeper but is usually moderate the first 48 hours, going deeper as the soreness subsides.

3. In-season maintenance

The bread and butter for serious athletes. Targets nagging tightness before it becomes injury, addresses the asymmetries every sport produces, and keeps the nervous system out of chronic guard. Most athletes do best with a 60-90 minute session every 2-4 weeks during heavy training.

Common patterns by sport

  • Runners - calves, soleus, hamstrings, glute med, IT band, tibialis posterior, plantar fascia
  • Lifters - thoracic spine, lats, pec minor, posterior chain, hip flexors, forearms
  • Cyclists - hip flexors, quads, glute med, lower back, neck and shoulders
  • Golfers - thoracic spine, shoulders, hip rotators, forearms, lats
  • Climbers - forearm flexors, lats, biceps, scalenes, deltoids
  • Pickleball / tennis - shoulder, lateral elbow (tennis elbow), hip rotators, calves
  • Basketball - quads, hamstrings, calves, glutes, low back

How often to book

  • Heavy training block: every 2 weeks
  • Normal training: every 3-4 weeks
  • Maintenance / off-season: monthly
  • Race week: light pre-event 24-48 hours out
  • After a marathon, century or peak event: a 90 or 120-minute flush 2-5 days post-event
